Causes of mental illness in dogs
Like humans, any number or combination of symptoms can be attributed to mental health conditions found in dogs. Sickness (some pet owners say their furry friends experienced depression after surgery), major life changes (a canine companion can develop depression after a new member of the family is brought home), and genetics all contribute to mental health disorders.
It’s essential to assess your dog’s environment to see what may be causing them harm or stress that could eventually contribute to their distress. While the reasons aren’t always obvious, some common causes of mental health disorders in dogs include degenerative issues, kenneling and confinement, illness and physical pain, anatomic disorders, toxis issues, autism, and abnormal nervous system activity.
