8. Greater Swiss mountain dog

The dependable and faithful Greater Swiss mountain dog earned its keep as a drafter, herder, and all-around pasture dog. As one of the dog breeds created by humans, they descend from war dogs brought over the Alps by Julius Caesar’s legion.

Eventually, they were used to haul loads of dairy and meat products to market, traveling through remote mountain passes.

These days, the Greater Swiss is primarily a family companion, beloved for their gentle, easygoing temperament. These dogs have many qualities, including a vigilant nature that makes them excellent watchdogs.

While you may think of a Greater Swiss as an outdoor dog, that’s far from the truth. These animals love people and will pine without human companionship.
