What happens when senior dogs age?
As dogs age, they will also start having less energy. They could develop cataracts and various other hearing problems, and their organs will eventually stop working as they should.
This also means that senior dogs are at a much higher risk of developing kidney and liver diseases, diabetes, and even obesity.
It’s worth noting that not all dogs are considered seniors at the same age, as it only depends on their breed and unique traits.
For instance, small breeds “get old” when they are 10 or 11 years of age. Medium-sized breeds, such as Golden Retrievers, become seniors at the age of 8 or 10 years, and bigger breeds are getting old by the age of 5 or 6.
It’s worth keeping in mind that genetics and their lifestyle will have a lot to say in the aging process.
This also means that your 6-year-old Great Dane could be completely healthy and show zero signs of getting old.
