This breed originates from Canada, where it was used for water rescues and fishing. As you would expect, these dogs are amazing long-distance swimmers, and this might come as a little bit counter-intuitive considering their size and their big-boned, muscular bodies.

They might look big and scary, but Newfoundlanders are actually “gentle giants” that enjoy spending their time with kids. They are great nannies and are known for really caring for the little ones.

These dogs can weigh up to 150 pounds, and they need plenty of exercise, attention, and love. Also, be aware that they can suffer from certain conditions like hip dysplasia and obesity.
