4. Lassie, the Rough Collie

No. 4 on our list of the most famous dogs in history is Lassie. This long-coated dog was the most popular doggie movie star of the ’40s and ’50s. If you’re a fan of Lassie movies, you can get them here.

There were several other famous canine characters at the time, but none endured quite like Lassie. Even for the past four decades, Lassie has been re-envisioned by different TV series and movies.

Although Lessie’s character is female, the role has always been given to male Collies. The first and original was a rough collie whose name was Pal. Since Pal passed away in 1958, all Lassie roles have been held by dogs from his bloodline.

You’ll be surprised to learn that Pal reportedly made twice what his human co-star, Elizabeth Taylor, earned in Lassie Come Home.
