Brown Widow Spider (Latrodectus geometricus)

It is considered that the brown widow developed in Africa. Even so, it seems that the first specimen came from South America.

Anywhere else in the world, it is seen as an invasive species. In California, there’s a wide brown widow population, but it can be easily found in the Caribbean, the U.S. states of the Gulf Coast, Japan, South Africa, Madagascar, Australia, and even Cyprus.

The species seem to be living in buildings, inside old tires, under automobiles, but also on shrubs and any other types of vegetation. The spider is known to have a brownish appearance, that could range from tan to black.
