5. Saint Bernard

Next on our list of dog breeds created by humans is the famous and beloved Saint Bernard. As early as 1050, hospice monks bred these genial giants to locate and rescue travelers buried by avalanches and drifts in snowy passes in the Alps.

During the following centuries, these lovely dogs were used in Alpine dairies and valley farms to herd, draft, and guard. A powerfully built, muscular dog with dropping ears and a massive head, the long-haired variety of Saint Bernard was developed by crosses with the Newfoundland dog in the 19th century.

As one of the most affectionate dog breeds created by humans, they make wonderful family dogs.
