Caucasian shepherd
This is one of the most popular Russian dog breeds today, and we can understand exactly why. They melt your heart with their sweet-looking bear-like face and their fluffy fur. Caucasian shepherds have a rich, if somewhat complicated, history as guard dogs because they are known to be strong and ferocious, especially with strangers.
The breed has its roots in the Caucasus Mountains. It was used hundreds of years ago to guard livestock and property, as well as to fight wolves and hunt bears. These dogs were later used to safeguard inmates in Soviet Gulag camps and also to watch over the Berlin Wall border.
However, when they have a loving family, the Caucasian shepherd is known to be loyal, calm, and kind, especially when properly trained. Its rich, water-resistant, double-layered coat comes in many shades ranging from grayish or white to yellow, red, and brindle and may require daily brushing.
