Chow Chow

We’re starting our list strong with one of the biggest contenders when it comes to being confused for a teddy bear: the Chow Chow! However, do not be fooled by this cute face and distinctive features; they have been around the world for a long time!

The Chow Chow is actually one of the oldest breeds in the world, as they have been around for thousands of years, and they are considered to be an ancient breed, with mentions of “war dogs resembling black-tongued lions”. They do live up to that description even today when they are no longer war dogs!

Their distinctive feature, besides their very thick and fluffy coat, are their tongues, which can be blue or a black-purple hue, along with their mouth, lips, and gums being black as well.

Depending on how often you take them to the groomers, you can have a teddy bear on your hands pretty often!
