The 5 Quietest Dog Breeds That Won’t Annoy Your Neighbors

5. Borzoi: The Elegant and Serene Sighthound

The Borzoi, also known as the Russian Wolfhound, is a breed of aristocratic grace and quiet dignity. Like their Greyhound cousins, they are sighthounds bred for speed and are remarkably calm and quiet within the home. They carry themselves with an elegant, almost aloof air, and they rarely engage in unnecessary barking. Their presence is serene and unobtrusive, making them a wonderful, if sizable, choice for those seeking a peaceful canine companion. Their quiet nature is one of the key traits that make them suitable apartment dogs, assuming the apartment is large enough to accommodate their lanky frame.

Temperament and Personality

Borzoi are known for being gentle, respectful, and independent. They are affectionate with their families but in a much more understated way than a breed like the Cavalier. They may enjoy a gentle cuddle on the couch but are equally happy to snooze in a corner by themselves. They can be reserved and standoffish with strangers, a trait that stems from their noble history. Their intelligence is often paired with a stubborn streak, a common trait in sighthounds. Training requires immense patience, consistency, and a sense of humor. They do not have the same innate desire to please as many other breeds, so training must be made fun and rewarding for them.

Exercise and Safety Needs

Similar to the Greyhound, the Borzoi is a sprinter. They need regular daily walks, but the most important exercise for them is the opportunity to run full out in a large, securely fenced area. And the fence must be high and secure. Like all sighthounds, their prey drive is incredibly powerful. Once a Borzoi sees a squirrel or cat in the distance, their instincts will take over, and they will be gone in a flash. They cannot be trusted off-leash in an unenclosed space under any circumstances. Their safety depends entirely on their owner’s vigilance in this regard.

Grooming and Health

The Borzoi’s long, silky coat is beautiful but requires significant grooming. It needs to be brushed several times a week to prevent matting and to manage shedding. They are a generally healthy breed, but like other deep-chested dogs, they are at risk for bloat. Owners should be educated on the signs and the need for immediate veterinary care. Their large size also means that food and vet bills will be higher than for a smaller dog, a practical consideration for any potential owner.
