The Top 7 Cat Breeds That Act Like Dogs

4. The Burmese: The Velvety Velcro Cat

If you want a cat that is physically and emotionally attached to you, look no further than the Burmese. These cats are the definition of “Velcro cats.” With a compact, muscular body and a short, satin-like coat, the Burmese is surprisingly heavy for its size. But its most defining feature is an insatiable need for affection and companionship. They retain a playful, kitten-like energy well into their adult years and are utterly devoted to their people.

Personality and Temperament

Burmese cats are extremely social, charming, and a little bit goofy. They thrive on being the center of attention and will use their cleverness to ensure they get it. They will follow you, “talk” to you in soft rumbles, and insist on a spot in your lap or curled up on your shoulder. This deep need for social contact means they are not suited for homes where they will be left alone for long hours. A lonely Burmese is an unhappy and potentially destructive Burmese.

Energy and Enrichment Needs

Their perpetual kittenhood means they need plenty of outlets for their energy. They love to climb, chase, and pounce. A tall cat tree is a must, as are daily interactive play sessions. They are very intelligent and can learn tricks quickly, enjoying the one-on-one attention that training provides. Because they are so people-focused, the best “toy” for a Burmese is often their human companion. Their need for near-constant company makes them great cats for dog lovers who are used to having a shadow.

Grooming and Health Basics

The Burmese’s short, fine coat is one of the easiest to care for. A quick weekly brushing or even just petting with a damp cloth is enough to keep it gleaming. While generally healthy, some lines can be prone to conditions like hypokalemia (low potassium levels) and feline orofacial pain syndrome. Sourcing a kitten from a responsible breeder who is aware of these issues is important for a healthy start in life.

Living with a Burmese

The ideal home for a Burmese is one with plenty of people and activity. They do wonderfully in busy families and often get along with other pets, especially if they have a companion to play with when their humans are busy. For a single person who works from home or a retired couple, a Burmese can be an incredibly loving and entertaining companion. They are truly lap cats for seniors who want an active and engaging friend. If you want a cat that will be your constant, adoring sidekick, the Burmese is an excellent choice.
