Before you take your dog into public spaces, you must understand federal laws governing working animals. Misrepresenting a therapy dog as a service animal causes confusion and creates legal friction for legitimate service teams.

As outlined by the U.S. Department of Justice ADA Guidelines, therapy dogs do not possess public access rights under federal disability law. They cannot legally accompany you into grocery stores, restaurants, or private businesses. They enter facilities like hospitals, schools, and nursing homes solely through formal invitation and permission from facility administrators.

Air travel regulations have also evolved significantly. Under Department of Transportation rules implemented in January 2021, commercial airlines accommodate only trained service dogs. Airlines classify therapy dogs and emotional support animals as standard pets; you must transport them according to standard pet carry-on rules and pay applicable airline pet fees.
