A mere lick of this seemingly innocent treat, especially darker chocolates without the addition of milk, can send a dog through bouts of vomiting, diarrhea, thirst, muscle tremors, arrhythmia, seizures, and even death.

While other animals have been known to negatively react to chocolate, it seems that dogs are most vulnerable. Your pup eating chocolate when you’re not around is probably the most common situation.

The biggest issue isn’t only that a dog has eaten chocolate, but also that you don’t know how much time has elapsed since consumption or how much was consumed, which are two of the most important factors for assessment.

Fortunately, there are protocols and treatments for dealing with situations when dogs are poisoned with chocolate. The most important thing you should do before you get to the veterinarian is to hydrate your dog, since it will typically exhibit behaviors that eliminate fluid from its body.
